Dear Mother, Dad, and Girls,
I just got three letters. Kenneth, you, and Ruby. Damnit
– I didn’t hear from Rosie today, but I‘ll probably have two or three from her
next time. Kenneth is laying around in England just like I was, he won’t
come over for quite a while. I don’t think. You’re getting as bad as Aunt Sara.
All you seem to worry about is me going to the front – ha hell we can play boy
scouts up there just as good as anywhere. My job doesn’t call for being on the
front Mama. The other men have it tough, but my job is back at the command
post. Now does that make you feel better Mama? It kinda gets my goat to sit
back and let the others do the dirty work, but that’s my job. We are still by
the river and taken dips every day. People are in and out bringing us eggs and
vegetables all the time. I get Kenneth’s letters in about seven days, but mine
take a lot longer to get to him for some reason. I just ask the boys in our
crew what I should ask for this time and they said as for some more cookies, so
we want another box of cookies – they don’t take so much sugar anyway. Put some
more writing paper in it too. The others get packages too and we all eat them
together.
The news are on now. It sure sounds good. We will
probably have Paris
time you get this letter. All the boys are making a pool – each putting in $3
then pick a date as to when the Germans quit. It won’t be too long now. We did
the same thing before D-day. Made a pool as to when it would be.
Ruby is planning on coming to Tucson and get a job there at the airfield
like Hazel did. She was all honey and pie in her letter today. Ha. Damned her –
she better leave me alone or I’ll fix her. Boy we have been eating good lately
steak, pork chops, fresh eggs, tomatoes. I’m getting fatter all the time I’m
afraid. I could go for a nice big water melon though. I’ll make up for it all
pretty soon. Hope you are all well.
Love to all,
Your son,
Max.
