This blog is a place for the letters that Corporal Max Blazzard wrote home to his family during his service in WWII, and a few that they wrote to him.

September 5, 1944

France

September 5, 1944
Dear Mother and all,

I just finished a letter to Kenneth so I’ll try writing a line to you and Rosalie. I went to a picture show this morning. The first one I’ve seen in two months. I enjoyed it but it wasn’t any good. Some army boys are hauling it around from the men at different places.

Our daily rations just came in on our trucks and it also had a lot of wine that has just been captured. There was enough of it to give everyman in the outfit a quart. It is French wine of course. It is good too Dad. Wish you had some. The label says 1938 and it is red as blood. I guess you think I’m a regular old sot – huh Mama? Ha. Well I never touch it – it is too sour. They are always bringing in captured supplies, lye soap – and canned goods, good too.

Mama don’t you forget that Rosalie’s birthday is the 30th and I’d like you to get her a present and give it to her for me.

How are you all and what sort of a settlement did they make with you Dad? We have been having a lot of rain lately.

Love to all
Your son,
Max
