November 20, 1944
Dear Mother and all,
I had another letter from Rosalie yesterday. I have had
letters from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of November
from her but there is a big skip from the 20th October to the 1st
of November. Same with you but I will get them all sooner than later.
I had a good trip yesterday in a truck to an old German
air field to get lumber. We are building small huts to camp in out of the mud.
You should have seen the remains of the air field. What a wreck I have seen
several just like it. We had to cross a big river on a ferry to get there. The
bridge was gone. That was a lot of fun. I was afraid that little tug boat
wouldn’t ever get us across but it finally did.
We got our regular P.X. rations this
evening. That is candy, gum, and cigarettes. We got each man three Nestle candy
bars, a pack of juicy fruit gum, and the boys a carton of cigarettes. Oh yes
and a pack of razor blades. We get that every few days only not usually that
many cigarettes. No Mama, I don’t smoke the cigarettes that are issued to me,
but I sure put some good deals over with them. They are worth their weight in
gold to the ones that smoke, so I have the advantage on them.
These are the longest nights. The
sun goes down at five and don’t come up until eight. I usually get to bed
around seven thirty and get up at the same time for breakfast. Of course I pull
four hours of guard each night, that is – corporal of the guard. I put other
men on guard while I sit inside by a fire and read. Ha.
I saw another good show today. I get
to see three a week. Well I’ve got to write Rosalie a line. I’ll get around to
writing Roberta in a day or two. About pay day I think.
Love
to allYour son,
Max
Mama, if you can find a box of chocolates anywhere send it to Grandma Blazzard for me. If you can’t try to get her a small present of some kind.
