This blog is a place for the letters that Corporal Max Blazzard wrote home to his family during his service in WWII, and a few that they wrote to him.

September 20, 1944

France

Sept 20, 1944
Dear Mother & all,

I just had a good letter from Rosalie, one from Hazel, Ruby, and from the wife of one of my buddies, but it didn’t seem complete without one from you. The same when I hear from you and not from Rosalie. I have been falling down in my writing the last few days.

We are still in the rest camp and have fun every day. Today we got up a baseball team and played two games with other Batteries. We won the first one and lost the last one. I played catcher. I’m so big and fat that they didn’t figure the ball could get by me. Ha. Damned if I’m not getting fatter and lazier by the day. They feed us too good. We had some of the best steaks today and all we could eat too. I go swimming in the lake here every day.  If we aren’t playing ball or swimming, we’re loafing or else in some ones peach orchard. We have quite a time. I don’t like these rest camps much though - - everything is too G.I. and up to snuff.

Hope you are all well at home. It is getting late so I’ll quit for tonight. Do you ever write by a flashlight?
Love to all,
Max
