Dear Mother & All,
How are you all at home today? I am just laying around
trying to get out of work. We were out to one of the other batteries playing
baseball again this morning. We lost all the way around, on the way down to the
other battery, we wrecked one of the trucks, lost the ball game, and a lot of
money bet on the game. The battery
commander is a little unhappy with us all. The truck swerved to one side to
miss a civilian woman in the middle of the road and hit a tree. Another truck
hit the woman and she was pretty seriously hurt. None of the boys in our truck
was even scratched but that truck was really torn up. The other battery that we
played ball with is 22 miles from our place. There are lots of poppies in bloom
now. They are just like the ones in France and England. They are big red ones
not like ours at home at all. Next time I am out in the fields, I’ll get you
one and press it for you.
I had a good letter from Rosalie night before last. I
should be getting a package from you and her both before long.
We are going to be moving again soon, I don’t know where
to, but don’t be surprised if my next letter comes from a different country
here in Europe. I haven’t heard from Kenneth or John lately I wish I knew just
what they are going to do now. Oh yes, I guess you have already heard about
Mrs. Jellinghausen’s other boy in the air corps being killed. Rosalie was
telling me about it. His plane exploded in the air and he didn’t have a chance
to jump out. Rosalie said the Mrs. Jellinghausen sure took it hard. It was sure
too bad.
I guess you nearly have the house finished by now. Things
are going to look a lot different to me when I get home.
This evening after hours, my buddies and I are going
horseback riding and maybe swimming if we don’t go to the show. We always find
plenty to do at night to have fun. We went to a good show last night. It was
“Christmas in Connecticut.” I really got a kick out of it.
There isn’t anything to write about this time so I am
going to quit and write to Rosalie while I am at it.
Love to all,Your son,
Max
