This blog is a place for the letters that Corporal Max Blazzard wrote home to his family during his service in WWII, and a few that they wrote to him.

September 22, 1944

France

Sept 22, 1944
Dear Mother & All,

I just finished a letter to Rosalie. I have been laying around reading most of the day. Then of course played our daily game of baseball. I may get to go to town on pass tomorrow. If I do, I’ll get some pictures of the place and try to get some wooden shoes if I can. This is really a nice place here. These are some of the prettiest red squirrels here and fields too. There is a girl that herds cows here all day long. She is out here now and it is nearly dark. If I could ever get up enough energy to dig myself some worms, I’d go fishing here in the lake. Ha – there are some good fish in it.

Sometimes I wonder about this outfit – they change us around so much. We just go back and forth from first, third, and ninth armies. I read in the paper so here they have all kinds of ice cream in Belgium – 27 different flavors. Boy, I could go for that. I hope you are all well – I’m just like a hog. Norman and Hazel should be in Louisiana by now.

Love to all,
your son,
Max
