This blog is a place for the letters that Corporal Max Blazzard wrote home to his family during his service in WWII, and a few that they wrote to him.

July 30, 1944

France

July 30, 1944
Dear Mother & all,

The day was just made complete I got my mail. Four letters today and two of them were from Rosie. I had to laugh at my 1st sergeant a while ago, he stopped me and hugged me just like a brother. I couldn’t figure it but until I noticed the sparkle in his eye and discovered the quart of cognac he had. He says you didn’t think I had that sparkle in my eye for nothing did you. Ha.

I got mail from Kennett in about seven days now. He still thinks that I’m in England and is trying to locate me. He should have some of my letters soon. Rosalie said that she saw you all pass either coming or going off the mountain when Norman was there. She was up there with a Smith girl just for the day. She said she had a good time. I was bothered so much last time I tried to write that I’m sitting on a case of hand grenade this time for security – ha it works too.

I was taking a bath down by an old farm house today and I found and old French coin. It is a ten Franc piece. It is the first that I’ve seen. Coin I mean. These people sure seem queer to live right in with their livestock. Horse, cows and all right in one room of their house. I’ll be glad when these apples gets ripe – I’m sweating them out now. There isn’t much to write about today as this will be short. Hope you are all well.

Love to all,
Max

Over – I can’t get any more air-mail letter envelopes, put some in a letter and send them to me.
